Within easy reach of the Mother City of Cape Town, the Cape winelands as well as the Overberg Region, recently lured me back for a three-night relaxation and gourmet sojourn of note.
Wine estates aplenty beckoned with picturesque gardens, fragrant roses, state of the art tasting rooms, delectable food and of course, exquisite wines. The decision was to visit the latest rising stars of everything sublime regarding food and wine that had frequently been mentioned to me.
Maison Wine Estate with the Chef’s Warehouse Restaurant were the first to highly impress. A small but superb collection of red and white wines combined with the staff’s professional, sharp and friendly service resulted in a meaningful purchase towards my modest wine collection.
As for the food: the tapas style menu is served either on the restaurant’s elegant wooden deck or under shady umbrellas in the beautiful garden. Both seating areas provide lovely views of the surrounding mountain ranges while a handful of happy chickens roam nearby… a truly tranquil setting for the 8-course menu appealing to all food preferences and which proved to be a sublime beginning to the upcoming 4 days. As a personal recommendation, ask the attentive waitress to serve the plates with a little savouring space inbetween.
Le Lude Wine Estate on the other side of the Franschhoek Valley has established itself as one of the crafters of superb Methode Cap Classique. A panoramic setting and extensive gardens lead to the elegant and welcoming tasting room that offers beautiful seating spaces to appreciate the 3 varietals of two estate wines and one French Champagne. A generous and superb canapé selection proved to be a visual treat for the eyes and a feast for the palate. The adjoining Orangerie restaurant was our next stop with a taste of more bubbles and lunch. Service and dining was impeccable and chef Nicolene Barrow and her team are wonderfully dedicated wizards of gourmet delights.
